Pablo de Pedro Cano was born in Madrid and studied viola with Thomas Riebl and Veronika Hagen at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. From an early stage, he developed a broad musical outlook encompassing both historically informed performance practice and contemporary music.
From 2003 to 2005 he was principal violist of the European Union Chamber Orchestra, with which he performed in Europe, the United States, the Far East, and South America. He subsequently became a member of Concentus Musicus Wien, where he worked closely with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. At the same time, he established himself as a specialist in contemporary music, collaborating with ensembles such as Proyecto Gerhard, the Austrian Ensemble for New Music, and Klangforum Wien, as well as with composers and artists including Helmut Lachenmann, Hans Werner Henze, and Yvonne Loriod Messiaen.
Today, Pablo de Pedro Cano is regarded as one of the most sought-after violists in the field of historically informed performance. He is principal violist of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble under Thomas Hengelbrock, of Concentus Musicus Wien under Stefan Gottfried, and of the Irish Baroque Orchestra under Peter Whelan. In addition, he is a regular guest principal violist with the Kammerorchester Basel, Europa Galante, the English Baroque Soloists, Il Convito, Collegium Vocale Gent, and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. His concert activity takes him to the world’s leading concert halls and international festivals, and numerous recordings have been released on labels such as Sony Music and Deutsche Grammophon. As a soloist, he has appeared with ensembles including Concentus Musicus Wien, the Wiener Akademie, Europa Galante, the Irish Baroque Orchestra, and Il Convito. In 2025, he performed Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante together with violinist Erich Höbarth and Concentus Musicus Wien at the Musikverein in Vienna and at La Seine Musicale in Paris.
Chamber music plays a central role in his artistic work. He is the violist of the Edding Quartet, which is dedicated to the Classical and Romantic repertoire on historical instruments. He is also a founding member of the Vienna-based ensemble Delirio, devoted to Austrian Baroque music.
At the end of January 2026, his new CD The Viola Sonatas of the Royal Chapel of Madrid will be released on the Eudora label. This is the first time that this repertoire has been recorded on original instruments, and it is dedicated to the eleven viola sonatas composed for the competitive examinations of the Royal Chapel of Madrid, presenting in their entirety a repertoire that has so far remained little known in the history of Spanish music.
Pablo de Pedro Cano is Professor of Historical Viola at the Royal College of Music in London. He has given masterclasses at, among other institutions, the conservatories of Salamanca and Burgos, the master’s program in Saintes (Poitiers), the Austria Baroque Academy, the Lech Masterclasses, and the Academy for Early Music Bruneck. Since 2004, at the invitation of Thomas Hengelbrock, he has been a member of the faculty of the Balthasar Neumann Academy, where he works with young musicians from Europe and Cuba.
As a permanent member of the artistic committee of the Balthasar Neumann Academy, he is involved in the development of projects, dramaturgies, and innovative concert formats, and he is active in international initiatives such as the transatlantic youth academy CuE and the Balthasar NOVA Academy. More recently, he has also emerged as an orchestral conductor and seeks, in this role, to pass on the experience he has gained through collaborations with figures such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Thomas Hengelbrock, and Philippe Herreweghe.
